Though unconfirmed by Marvel Studios, it seems KICK-ASS star Aaron Taylor-Johnson is the frontrunner for mutant brotherhood-member turned Avenger, Quicksilver. For clarity’s sake, that name may seem familiar, and for those that don’t know, Quicksilver can frequently be seen in the X-MEN universe, as both the son of Magneto and brother of fellow confirmed Avenger, Scarlet Witch, another mutant in the X-MEN universe. However, due to the acquisition of the X-MEN film rights, both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are assumed unable to discuss their origins, their mutant powers or their father – unless of course the contesting film studios have come to some sort of agreement, back-room gambling style.
Taylor-Johnson took to avidly discussing his practically-confirmed role as the light-footed speedster with Total Film, revealing his thoughts on the character and what it means for the silver-screen adaptation. It’s evident from what he has to say that he wants to build a powerful relationship with sister Scarlet Witch and for him to be an extremely three-dimensional character.
“There’s years – over 50 years – of backstory on him all there to use, and I like doing that. Him and his sister [Scarlet Witch] have been abandoned by their parents and their father, and they grew up in Eastern Europe defending and looking out for themselves and each other. His sister really is his guidance – emotionally she’s the one who looks after him, and vice versa. He’s very overprotective physically – he doesn’t want anyone touching her.”
As refreshing as it is to see an actor go to the roots of a character they are meant to play, the motivation of doing so is just as important. Taylor-Johnson tells how he wants the character to be portrayed, cementing his powers within most aspects of his life.
“He has real anger frustration – I like that. I always thought it’d be quite funny if you saw him eating loads and people asked him why and he’d explain it’s because he’s burning so much energy all the time. Or ideas that you’d see him come back round – but he’s already nipped out and got his lunch somewhere else. He just got bored – his attention span is so fucking quick.”
Quicksilver is an interesting character to adapt, to say the least, where his speed is typically matched by his wits, but with past trauma and his relationship with his sister taken into consideration, it would be very intriguing to see what Aaron brings to the roundtable of super-friends.
