Diesel’s Marvel Role Revealed!

We’ll soon see the one-man promotional machine that is Vin Diesel back in the franchise that made him a star – that of futuristic outlaw Richard B. Riddick in David Twohy’s sci-fi sequel RIDDICK. However, since he confirmed a meeting with Marvel Studios a number of months ago, most speculation has been focused on his role in their comic-book-inspired, cinematic universe. Today, Diesel gave his strongest hint yet that it won’t be as part of Joss Whedon’s AVENGERS: THE AGE OF ULTRON as many had suggested, but as the voice of the talking, towering tree Groot in James Gunn’s currently-shooting, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, having posting an image of the ‘otherworldly’ character on his Facebook page.

I know bugger all about the unique comic-book series the film will be based on but I love a good superhero effort and I love Gunn’s previous big-screen films, SLITHER and SUPER. Plus, having seen the first awesome footage during the epic Hall H panel at San Diego Comic Con, I have to say GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is my must-see Marvel movie of all currently in production. Lead Chris Pratt is destined for super stardom from what we at THN witnessed, with a naturally comedic presence and cocksure personality.

Diesel’s no stranger to voice work, having previously worked on the title character of Brad Bird’s acclaimed adventure, THE IRON GIANT. We await confirmation, which surprisingly didn’t come over the weekend with Marvel’s appearance at Disney’s 23 Expo, but it looks nailed on Diesel will join Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly and Glenn Close in the 1st August 2014 release.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
