One of the most visually stylish and indeed exciting directors working in Hollywood today is Timur Bekmambetov, who has brought us the likes of NIGHT WATCH, WANTED and the more recent ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER. Bekmambetov is an equally prolific producer (he produced APOLLO 18 and THE DARKEST HOUR in recent years), and has a slew of projects in the works including one intriguingly titled SQUIRRELS, which looks like some kind of comedic horror movie.
SQUIRRELS hasn’t gone into production yet, but there is already a ‘sales’ trailer online courtesy of our friends over at Bleeding Cool. The site also has a synopsis for the film, which Bekmambetov is producing (though apparently not directing), from a script by Daniel Antoniazzi and Ben Shiffrin, and claims that backers Red Sea Media are looking at some A-list talent to star.
When a young man’s estranged father is killed under suspicious circumstances, he returns home for the first time in years to get to the bottom of the mystery. Hoping to uncover some logical explanation, he instead finds his mom’s sleazy new boyfriend, a natural gas company buying up the town, an angry female sheriff who happens to be his ex-girlfriend, and an army of flesh-eating squirrels hellbent on destroying everything in their path due to an erosion of their food chain as a result of environmental destruction by the gas company.
