While The Office may be long gone, Ricky Gervais has recently returned to the role of David Brent with the Youtube web-series “Learn Guitar With David Brent” and the Comic Relief special ‘The Return of Brent’ but he doesn’t look to be stopping there. Gervais hopes Brent will follow in the successful footsteps of Alan Partridge and land his own movie. Gervais hopes the latest episodes “will be the basis for a movie about Brent trying to make it in the music industry”, which would build on the music video he already released back in March called ‘Equality Street’. He also wants to land a record deal to release original material as David Brent, which could certainly be successful if they’re all as awkwardly funny as ‘Equality Street’.
As is always the question with individual characters getting their own films, can Brent’s personality sustain a feature-length film? Again, Alan Partridge has made the leap but Steve Coogan’s creation was always the focus of his series while David Brent was part of an ensemble piece. You also have to wonder if the fact that Brent simply isn’t that good can hold it’s weight for a story lasting at least ninety minutes. One thing for sure is that Gervais has the utmost confidence in his creation and thinks taking the character into the music industry has a lot of potential.
