We’re only weeks away from the release of Ron Howard’s fact-based Formula One racing biopic RUSH. Still, the Oscar-winning director is already hard at work prepping his next project, again led by Chris Hemsworth in another true-life tale based on tragic events – IN THE HEART OF THE SEA.
Shooting on the epic seafaring adventure will begin next month as we follow the harrowing disaster which befell the whaleship Essex. The ordeal, which inspired Herman Melvile’s iconic novel ‘Moby Dick’, is set during 1819, when the ship was stalked and rammed by an massive sperm whale in the South Pacific ocean. Surviving crewmates drifted for 90 days on life rafts, encountered disease, hunger, before being forced into cannibalism.
Joining Hemsworth is Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Ben Whishaw, Tom Holland, Sam Keely and Brendan Gleeson, in the film which has just revealed Howard’s FROST/NIXON and RUSH scribe Peter Morgan recently came aboard for extensive rewrites of Charles Leavitt’s original draft, itself based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s same-titled 2000 novel.
Howard has also released some official production photos from a recent meeting on the project. They certainly appear to show the small-scale port in which the doomed vessel will sail from.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

Why do articles about movies constantly refer to the source book as a novel? The book was non-fiction. And a great read.
