One of the brightest shining lights in the horror genre is writer/director Jim Mickle. Following his impressive indie debut MULBERRY STREET and superb coming-of-age vampire survival thriller STAKE LAND, Mickle landed the US remake of acclaimed Mexican cannibal drama WE ARE WHAT WE ARE, collaborating again with his frequent writing/acting partner Nick Damici. A brand new trailer and clip have surfaced from the brooding ‘family drama’ centred on two teens left to fend for their young sibling after their father’s death and struggling in keeping up their gruesome secret tradition!
In WE ARE WHAT WE ARE, a re-imagining of the 2010 Mexican film of the same name, Jim Mickle paints a gripping and gruesome portrait of an introverted family struggling to keep their macabre traditions alive. A seemingly wholesome and benevolent family, the Parkers have always kept to themselves, and for good reason. Behind closed doors, patriarch Frank (Bill Sage, “Boardwalk Empire”) rules his family with a rigorous ferver, determined to keep his ancestral customs intact at any cost. As a torrential rainstorm moves into the area, tragedy strikes and his daughters Iris (Ambyr Childers, THE MASTER) and Rose (Julia Garner, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE) are forced to assume responsibilities that extend beyond those of a typical family.
WE ARE WHAT WE ARE is released in the UK 25th October and the US on the earlier date of the 27th September.
Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
