‘Outbreak’ To Infect The Small-Screen!

I’m ancient enough to remember seeing Wolfgang Petersen’s all-star viral thriller OUTBREAK on the big-screen way back in 1995 . A cast consisting of Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Spacey, Rene Russo, Donald Sutherland and Morgan Freeman battled for mankind’s survival against the spread of a viral epidemic. Despite the superb cast and capable director, even at 15 years-old, I recall it being rather average and I don’t believe I’ve revisited it since. Still, that isn’t stopping Hollywood developing a brand new television series based on the concept.

NBC, the network who recently turned Thomas Harris’ literary monster HANNIBAL into one of the best shows of 2013, have ER executive producers Jack Orman and John Wells working on the screenplay for a pilot. They’re hoping to make it a continuing hour-long series for next year. There are no plot details or casting as yet but as ever we’ll keep you posted.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
