With MAN OF STEEL now finished at $650m at the worldwide box office, it’s safe to say that the Warner Bros. Superman reboot is a resounding success with audiences and it’s now been confirmed that BATMAN VS SUPERMAN starring Ben Affleck as Batman will be released in 2015.
One complaint however, that has been expressed very vocally by audiences and critics alike is the mass destruction caused by Superman and General Zod in the climactic battle of Metropolis. The controversy surrounding MAN OF STEEL’s ending and both the direct and in-direct death that was caused by Superman is still a hot topic of discussion. The films director Zack Snyder has now shed some light on the issue and the reasoning behind the ending, here is what he had to say:
‘I wanted the movie to have a mythological feeling. In ancient mythology, mass deaths are used to symbolize disasters. In other countries like Greece and Japan, myths were recounted through the generations, partly to answer unanswerable questions about death and violence. In America, we don’t have that legacy of ancient mythology. Superman (who first appeared in ‘Action Comics’ in 1938) is probably the closest we get. It’s a way of recounting the myth.’
It’s fair to say that Snyder’s reasoning is certainly interesting and deeper than many had previously thought, however it remains to be seen how this battle will affect the sequel in terms of characters and the films post-Superman world. It is widely speculated that both Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor will be involved in the re-building of Metropolis which would no doubt create an interesting dynamic between Superman and the two characters.
Expect further announcements for the untitled Superman/Batman film soon as filming is expected to commence early 2014 and we’ll keep you posted.
