‘The Disciple’ Is Announced As Finland’s Oscar Submission

It starts… We have Oscar news, but from Scandinavia! Finland has announced that Ulrika Bengts’ period drama THE DISCIPLE will be the country’s entry for the Oscars.

The film is set on an island in the Baltic Sea in 1939 and focuses on the relationship between thirteen-year-old Karl and Hasselbond, a lighthouse master the boy is sent to work for as an assistant.  Karl wins the master’s heart but this unfortunately sees him come to conflict with the man’s son, as a dark family secret emerges.

This is Bengts’ second film, her first being the 2011 movie IRIS, also a coming of age movie set in the 1890s.

THE DISCIPLE will be released domestically on 27th September and will be screened during Helsinki’s Love & Anarchy Film Festival later this month. The movie starts Erik Lonngren, Patrik Kumpulainen, Ping Mon Wallen, Nirklas groundstroem and Amanda Ooms.
