What A Load Of Sith! Cumberbatch’s Rumoured ‘Star Wars’ Role Revealed?

Last night we brought you details of Benedict Cumberbatch’s imminent announcement in joining the cast of J.J. Abrams’ soon-to-shoot STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, after strong rumours began circulating he’s already onboard. When contacted for confirmation, Disney and Lucasfilm were quick to rebuff the notion with official denials, which isn’t a surprise given Abrams’ projects are usually shrouded in secrecy. However, that’s not been helped by the SHERLOCK actor’s mysterious departure from Guillermo del Toro’s CRIMSON PEAK.

The thing is the story not going away and many sources have dug a little deeper and believe just as Abrams’ STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, Cumberbatch is signed on as the villain and most certainly a Sith lord. One that he’ll continue through the brand new trilogy. Again, until this is confirmed via the studio we must treat this as rumour but there is no doubt the story is gaining momentum and is being greeted with excitement by fans of the epic sci-fi space saga.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII is expected to feature previous characters Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia  in some capacity, with their respective acting icons – Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher – returning to the roles that made them famous. It’s also been mentioned that both Alex Pettyfer and Rachel Hurd-Wood are possible contenders for the offspring of the Han and Leia in the script being penned by Michael Arndt.

What do you guys think about the possible casting? As ever give us your thoughts.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

I don’t really care if he plays a good or a bad character. Benedict is (in my opinion), one of the greatest actors of today, so I’m sure he’ll be amazing in whichever role he is given.
