Not content with conquering the UK, and indeed worldwide music charts, the boys from One Direction dominated the UK box-office this past weekend, with ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US (3D) easily hitting the top spot with £3.5 million in box-office takings (including Thursday totals). The performance by the British band eclipsed the Justin Bieber movie NEVER SAY NEVER from a couple of years ago, taking more than that film of its first few days than the entire box-office run of the Bieber flick. The total weekend only take for the documentary, directed by Morgan Spurlock, came in at around the £2.2 million mark, still easily securing it the number one position.
Sony’s ELYSIUM dropped one spot this week to number two with a little over £1.2 million, making it the favourite ‘alternative’ movie for cinema goers to go see this week. A decent performance in week two, but a drop off 44% on last week.
At three, also dropping a position is the Jennifer Aniston led drug-muling comedy WE’RE THE MILLERS, refusing to budge from the top three in its second week out there, a drop of just 25% on last week’s debut. The film has now grossed £4 million.
At four is the Disney animated fare PLANES still trying to squeeze as much summer box-office from the last remaining days of the school holidays as it possibly can. The film will now be considered a success making £5.8 million since release three weeks ago.
Rounding out the top five this week is the Michael Bay directed and Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson starring PAIN & GAIN, a film that didn’t fare quite as well as Wahlberg’s movie from last month 2 GUNS. PAIN & GAIN secured a little over £1 million in pound notes over the three days (excluding bank holiday previews), compare to 2 GUNS £1.4 million. Not good.
The other new releases were a little further down the chart with indie fare THE WAY, WAY BACK debuting at number seven with £399k in the bank at the horror flick with a great deal of positive buzz YOU’RE NEXT, which sneeked into the top ten at number ten with £353k for Lionsgate.
This week sees the release of RIDDICK, so expect that to hit fairly highly on the countdown, as well as Richard Curtis’s romantic-comed-sci-fi ABOUT TIME, along with more limited released THE GREAT HIP HOP HOAX, AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS with Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, and the Alan Cumming starrer ANY DAY NOW. Check back next week to see how they fared.
