‘Miss Saigon’ Breaks Records As Box Office Opens

Miss Saigon

The West End revival of Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil’s Miss Saigon has broken box office records on its first day of ticket sales.  It took more than £4.4 million yesterday which beat the previous West End record set by monster hit The Book of Mormon which could only manage £2.1 million.

Producer Cameron Mackintosh said of the record:

“I’m bowled over with today’s box office take. It’s staggering, today’s response is completely overwhelming.”

Miss Saigon, based on the opera Madame Butterfly, tells the story of a marriage between an American GI and a Vietnamese bar girl. This production will be a complete re-imagining of the classic musical with a grittier look at the designs and operations involved.  It will also feature a brand new song “Maybe” for the character of Ellen which English speaking audiences will be hearing for the first time.

The original production, directed by Nicholas Hytner and produced by Mackintosh, premiered in 1989 and ran for over 4,000 performances, closing in 1999. It starred Lea Salonga and Jonathan Pryce who both won Tony Awards for their performances.  The revival will be directed by Laurence Connor but no casting has been announced.

Miss Saigon opens on Saturday 3 May 2014  at the Prince Edward Theatre and is currently booking until 25 October, 2014. You can book tickets here.
