That title isn’t me trying to be offensive. It is in fact the latest news concerning a cinematic adaptation of the popular R.L. Stine books. It’s been a long time coming, but recent months have really seen the project move forward. Jack Black, mostly known for comedic roles, has been mentioned as circling the project which is to be diected by Rob Letterman. Black and Letterman have worked together on A SHARK’S TALE and GULLIVER’s TRAVELS, which doesn;t exactly instill any form of confidence in this big screen version of GOOSEBUMPS.
It sounds as though the film will be taking a comedic look at the franchise, and although the books and subsequent TV series were never the most terrifying examples of horror, they weren’t comedies. I’m a big fan of the books, as I enjoy their simplistic narrative approach in which every chapter ends in a cliffhanger. No word yet on whether the film will be an anthology piece, although this is looking very unlikely. Judging by the talent involved I can imagine Black as some librarian, and different characters from the books enter the real world.
The Goosebumps series is the second biggest selling book franchise in history, with Harry Potter coming first. Yes, they are meant for children, but they were also meant to scare them too. As long as it doesn’t end in a song it will avoid the cataclysmic disaster of GULLIVER’S TRAVELS.
