James ‘Insidious’ Wan To Quit Horror

James Wan Fast & Furious Image 2

James Wan, director of such recent horror films as THE CONJURING and INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2, has announced that he is to make scary movies no more, in an effort to avoid being pigeonholed into the genre for good.

This will come as a blow to the audience that helped Wan’s second INSIDIOUS effort reach the highest September box office figures in history, with a $41 million US opening – and also to the audience that helped Wan’s other 2013 effort, THE CONJURING, top box offices in July.

To everyone else, however, this is probably a welcome respite: while Wan may have brought some innovation to the genre with SAW (though the merits of that film’s effects on the genre are debatable), his most recent attempts have been entirely derivative. Still, now he’s moving on, maybe we’ll finally get a change from the endless waves of haunted house movies that Wan has been churning out of late.

Of course, it would be unwise to assume Wan will never make another horror film, but for now at least, he’s done with the genre:

‘I’m going to go on record and say I am finished with the horror genre. CONJURING and INSIDIOUS 2 are my two last scary movies… Hollywood puts you in a box. If you do a successful comedy, then you’re know as The Comedy Guy. If you do a successful car chase movie, then you become that guy. So I’m a student of cinema, so I just want to make sure I get the chance to make other kinds of films.’

For now, ‘other kinds of films’ refers to Wan’s helming of the FAST & FURIOUS franchise’s seventh instalment. Time will tell whether he continues to pursue action gigs from there, though it’s safe to say an established franchise like FAST & FURIOUS will do well at the box office no matter who is in the directing chair.

Are you happy to see Wan move onto other genres? Or are you thirsty for THE CONJURING 2 and INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3? Let us know in the comments below.
