Neill Blomkamp is well into pre-production on his next film following this summers massively entertaining hit Science fiction thriller ELYSIUM. Blomkamp’s CHAPPIE will begin filming later this year and Hugh Jackman has revealed he has a small role in the upcoming Science fiction comedy.
The plot of CHAPPIE will revolve around a robot that possesses artificial intelligence who is stolen by local gangsters to use for their own nefarious purposes. The film will once again star Blomkamp’s frequent collaborator Sharlto Copley who will be providing the voice of the title character whilst Dev Patel will star as the human lead, south African rap group Die Antwoord will also have a part in the film. During the Zurich Film Festival Hugh Jackman revealed he will also be joining the cast of Blomkamps CHAPPIE in what sounds like a small but pivotal role, here is what the X-MEN star had to say:
‘But I am doing a role in Neill’s new film, called Chappie, which we shoot in Johannesburg. I’m there for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next year’.
CHAPPIE sounds like it will definitely be an inspired piece of science fiction cinema, no doubt with some of Blomkamp’s trademark political subtext peppered in for good measure, lets hope after this he will move on to that long awaited DISTRICT 9 sequel. The film will be produced by MCR for Sony/TriStar Pictures and has a release date pencilled in for 27th March 2015.
