We don’t have long left until THOR: THE DARK WORLD flies into cinemas, presumably with as much oomph as the trusty Mjolnir. Featuring the return of Thor, son of Odin, as he fights for the Nine Realms (see below) against a primeval race led by Malekith the Accursed, who is out for revenge and intends to plunge the universe into darkness.
However, whilst we eagerly await its arrival, we’re left wondering as to the future of Thor. What otherworldly stepping-stones will he find himself jumping upon post-dark-world? Prepare yourself for the universal-scale game of hopscotch. According to a recent set-visit by Screen Rant for THOR: THE DARK WORLD, Executive producer and long-time Marvel-writer Craig Kyle discusses some very intriguing possibilities for future thorsomeness.
Within the sequel, director Alan Taylor not only elaborates the Asgardian culture previously seen in THOR, but also the other realms (totaling nine) hinted at in the God of Thunder’s debut, exploring in great depth the Norse mythology behind it. This includes Yggdrasil and Einherjar, the great cosmic foundation of the Nine Realms and the training ground for fallen warriors (where they fight and feast, awaiting the Ragnarok, for the day they can fight for Asgard once more) respectively. We’ll also get to explore the Hall of Science, a museum of scientific-discoveries, of sorts:
“This is gonna be a pretty neat spot that we actually get to explore, which will go into the various breakthroughs and discoveries of the Asgardians where you’ll see functioning models of the Big Bang and all these wonderful technologies that no human has ever laid eyes on before. And inside’s gonna be this living tree, which we believe is connected to Yggdrasil, the cosmic tree. And the effects and woes and success of the universe are spoken through this, this living object. So, should the end of all things ever come this would probably be the first thing to fall. And we have a really tremendous scene in here with Thor and Odin”
If we look back at the plot of THOR, introducing the Frost Giants from Jotunheim, and consider the introduction of the Dark Elves from Svartalfheim, two of the Nine Realms (and we’ve already seen Asgard as well as Midgard – Earth), the next logical step would be to introduce the Fire Demons of Muspelheim, the furthest realm from Asgard – a hellish realm, governed by Surtur, a fiery demonic ruler with power equal to that of Odin’s (see below, Surtur depicted in Thor: God of Thunder).
Also worth noting is an artefact known as The Eternal Flame, seen in the trophy room in THOR (see below), which according to comic book mythos, has mystical connections to Surtur and is rumoured to increase his power exponentially.
Another interesting issue with introducing Surtur into THOR 3 is in the comics, a seer, by the name of Volla, predicts that Loki, God of Mischief (and now well-known heart-throb, thanks to Mr. Hiddleston) frees Surtur with the aid of Malekith (sound familiar?) from imprisonment to bring about Ragnarök, a war that will bring about the end of days for the Norse Gods. When asked about Ragnarök, Kyle said this:
“It’s one of the bigger stories, right? [LAUGHS] So, who knows? [LAUGHS]”
And when asked if Malekith would be working on behalf of Surtur, he responded:
“It’s hard to say. [LAUGHS] I know in the comics he did.”
And finally, when asked as to whether Surtur and the Fire Demons would possibly be making an appearance:
“You’re gonna see aliens from all over, uh, specifically, you know, it’ll be a wait and see. [LAUGHS] Like I said we are moving further out into the nine realms of the universe, so, you know, you can’t fly too far before you hit something else in the universe. So [LAUGHS] we’ll see.”
Interestingly, in this story arc, the Avengers and Doctor Strange play vital parts in assisting in preventing Ragnarök. So now that Doctor Strange has been confirmed for Marvel’s “Phase Three”, is this likely to be something we’ll see in THOR 3? A future AVENGERS film, perhaps? It would certainly make sense, considering the scale and significance of the events would suit a feature-film, especially featuring our favourite super-friends.
THOR: THE DARK WORLD is directed by Alan Taylor and will come down from Asgard on the 30th October in UK cinemas and will be released in US cinemas on the 8th November. It’ll feature the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christopher Eccleston, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Stellan Skarsgård et al.
