‘Gravity’ Opens To Record-Breaking Figures At U.S. Box-Office

Gravity

The momentum for the release of Alfonso Cuaron’s GRAVITY has been building for months and months, and the outer space-set movie that stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock finally opened in North America this weekend. The film was expected to open big, but not this big, and this weekend, according to early estimates, GRAVITY has become the biggest opening October movie of all time with a huge $55.6 million in receipts for the three days. We’ll deliver our views on the film as it debuts at next week’s London Film Festival, but already across the pond, the film has been received very well by critics and fans alike.

GRAVITY is not just the biggest October opener Stateside; it is also both Sandra Bullock and George Clooney’s biggest opener too, and when you think back to some of the movies those two actors have appeared in, then that’s some feat. We’re even hearing Oscar talk as we step into the big awards season. Of course, there’s a long way to go until any type of gold statue is dished out, and there are many movies to be released between now and when voting ends, but you can’t help but wonder at the potential of this very simple space story that is wowing pretty much everybody.

Although the film made that $55.6 million over the weekend, it has actually grossed a whopping $87.4 million over the three days worldwide, in 27 markets with many more still to open, including out own over here in the UK. We’ll have to wait a little hile though, as GRAVITY isn’t set to debut across the UK and Ireland until 8th November.
