Well, the title says it all really, doesn’t it? Have the BBC found themselves a pile of lost 60’s DOCTOR WHO adventures? Well, the Radio Times, the Sunday Mirror, Bleeding Cool and Doctor Who Online all seem to think so. The latter has even gone so far as to break their embargo and tweet that they know what has been discovered.
Over a hundred and thirty episodes of DOCTOR WHO were junked or destroyed by the BBC in the 1970s, as was common practice at the time (videotape being an expensive commodity that could be reused over and over, providing the existing material on the tape was wiped). Since then, many have been recovered, thanks to both overseas broadcasters who retained their copies and private film collectors who’ve had them stashed away in their attic. Still, despite these finds, 106 episodes still remain missing.
But BBC Worldwide have now apparently organised a press conference and screening for journalists this Tuesday. How many episodes and which in particular have been recovered is unknown, but reports seem to agree that MARCO POLO (1964), THE ENEMY OF THE WORLD (1967-68) and THE WEB OF FEAR (1968) are the most likely recoveries.
So come tomorrow night, will the number of missing DOCTOR WHO episodes be in the double figures as opposed to triple? Rumours suggest that a lot has been found, but until tomorrow’s announcement, we’ll simply have to guess. Me? I’ve got my fingers crossed for Episode 1 of THE POWER OF THE DALEKS (1966), the first episode to feature Second Doctor Patrick Troughton in the famous role.
Which episodes do you want to be recovered? Comment below and let us know.
UPDATE: The BBC has now confirmed some Doctor Who episodes have been recovered and will be revealed to the Press later this week. Exciting news for Whovians everywhere.
