Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Justice League Dark’ Will See The Light

Guillermo Del Toro

As you may be aware, DC Comics and Warner Bros. are starting to press the accelerator on the development of their properties on both film and television. DC and Warner have had recent success on the big screen with Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed DARK KNIGHT trilogy and this years MAN OF STEEL. They also have the successful ARROW on television screens which has just began its second season.

Following these successful adaptations of some of the characters from their vast library, they have announced plans for an ARROW spin-off series based on THE FLASH, a GOTHAM series focussing on James Gordon and a CONSTANTINE television adaptation. These are in addition to the films DC Comics and Warner Bros. currently have in development, which include BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, a potential JUSTICE LEAGUE film and Guillermo Del Toro’s JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK.

Del Toro’s JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK (or DARK UNIVERSE) adaptation has been talked about by the director for almost a year now and will put together a team of lesser known supernatural heroes such as Swamp Thing, Zatanna, The Spectre and John Constantine. With the recent announcement of a CONSTANTINE television series in development from David S. Goyer, it begs the question of where that leaves Del Toro’s film that will also include the character. Asked in a recent interview, the director assures us that the film will press ahead regardless of the television series:

‘We talked about it at DC and Warners, and I feel confident that the two properties can exist at the same time, I think that DC is trying to create a great universe of characters, and expand it and make it clear to the audience that it’s a landscape of characters, and not just one that’s dependent on one or two characters’.

I suppose if SUPERMAN RETURNS and SMALLVILLE could co-exist then there shouldn’t be a problem with a far less popular character appearing in two different adaptations simultaneously. As always we’ll update you with any more news on this project.
