Does ‘Devil’s Due’ Trailer Deliver The Gory Goods?

We’ve only just posted the first chilling poster for 20th Century Fox’s found-footage fright flick DEVIL’S DUE and now we can bring you the first full trailer. It’s evident that Roman Polanski’s 1968 classic ROSEMARY’S BABY is an inspiration, so fingers crossed the Antichrist born from this chiller delivers the goods as I’m preferring the look of another pregancy-themed genre effort with Zack Parker’s PROXY. However, judge for yourself!

After a mysterious, lost night on their honeymoon, a newlywed couple finds themselves dealing with an earlier-than-planned pregnancy. While recordingeverything for posterity, the husband begins to notice odd behaviour in his wife that they initially write off to nerves, but, as the months pass, it becomes evident that the dark changes to her body and mind have a much more sinister origin.

The low-budget shocker is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a screenplay by Lindsay Devlin and Zoe Green. It stars Allison Miller and Zach Gilford and is slated for US cinemas 17th January and the UK on Valentine’s Day!

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

Yawn. I’d be more excited to see a man get pregnant with the devil’s baby. I mean it’s the devil so why not? Oh yeah, because the real fear has to do with reproduction and women’s bodies. We get it guys you’re disgusted by our human bodies.

“[T]he Mystical Pregnancy [is] a type of reproductive terrorism because it makes becoming pregnant seem disgusting, frightening and nightmarish… [P]regnancy and birth are natural processes that are being distorted into torture porn, ways of punishing women and exploiting their terror to up the dramatic stakes.”

This trope can’t just be brushed off as “just entertainment.” Human beings since the beginnings of the verbal storytelling, used narratives to understand ourselves and the world around us. When we hear a story repeated enough times it can affect the way we think about reality. The Mystical Pregnancy is just another sexist narrative that exploits women for being “female”.”
