Ben Affleck Talks Snyder’s Vision For ‘Batman Vs. Superman’

The (unfair) vitriol aimed at Ben Affleck regarding his casting as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL sequel appears to have calmed down now. Perhaps fans are beginning to realise the Oscar-winner ain’t such a bad choice as a more grizzled Caped Crusader after all. While he’s briefly spoke about landing the role during talk shows, he’s remained tight lipped as to why he choose to follow Christian Bale’s now-iconic incarnation in the still-untitled BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN project.

However, in a recent interview Batfleck has decided to offer a little more as to why the role was right for him, this despite initial sceptisism:

Initially I was reluctant as I felt I didn’t fit the traditional mould. But once Zack showed me the concept, and that it would be both different from the great movies that Chris and Christian made but still in keeping with tradition I was excited. Doing something different and new is always tricky and part of the thrill and the risk is that initially it confounds expectations. The truth is, it’s the movie and the execution of it is what all the actors depend on and I believe in Zack’s vision.

Asked if Warner Bros.’ CEO Kevin Tsujihara’s early description of a “tired, weary and seasoned” superhero was right, Affeck added,

Yes, Kevin described it aptly. I don’t want to go further because I want to be able to capitalise on what is new about this iteration by having it be a surprise to the audience.

Are you warming to Affleck as new The Dark Knight, battling/teaming with Henry Cavill’s Kal-El?

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
