Clooney’s ‘The Monuments Men’ Assemble For New Poster

George Clooney’s latest directorial effort, THE MONUMENTS MEN, has just saw its release moved from an overly crowded Christmas period to February 2014. Meaning it’s unlikely to qualify for next years Academy Awards. Perhaps its lighter look at one of the more fascinating historical wartime events, one that doesn’t focus too much on the harrowing times endured by those in World War II, suggests the film is unlikely to make the cut. Still, the film based on the same-titled novel by Robert M. Edsel looks an enjoyable fact-based caper centred on a secret group of art specialists chosen by the U.S. government to retrieve artwork stolen by the Nazis.

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action-thriller focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.  It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed?  But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.

The latest poster has arrives showcasing the all-star cast that includes Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Hugh Bonneville, Bob Balaban, John Goodman, Bill Murray and Jean DuJardin.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
