Ladies and gentlemen, Oscar season has officially started.
The IFP are once again in first with their mixture of concrete frontrunners and outsiders, seeing Steve McQueen’s 12 YEARS A SLAVE leading the pack (which is set to become a recurring theme…) with three nominations.
Usually playing heavily on their ‘independent’ namesake, it’s interesting to see the IFP choose so many mainstream choices. Though they find room to celebrate smaller offerings FRUITVALE STATION, SHORT TERM 12 and THE SPECTACULAR NOW, they can’t escape the presence of Oscar frontrunners INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, Blanchett, McConaughey and Redford.
Eternal supporting player Kathryn Hahn finds herself rewarded for her work in AFTERNOON DELIGHT, while CHRONICLE alumni Dane DeHaan and Michael B. Jordan also deservedly find themselves in a category that surely belongs to Lupita Nyong’o.
These picks may not resemble the eventual Oscar noms, but it’s still worth taking note of some of these early outside choices.
The ceremony will be held on December 2nd – check out the full list of nominations below:
