Octavia Spencer Cast As Lead In NBC’s ‘Murder, She Wrote’ Reboot

It’s staggering how long the classic series Murder, She Wrote ran for when you consider how ridiculous it all was (12 seasons, 264 episodes and 4 television movies). Every week Angela Lansbury’s writer-turned-sleuth was buggering off to visit a friend (she must have been more popular that boy band No Direction) and every sodding time someone pegs it! I’d have loved to see an episode in which her Jessica Fletcher was told by a pal to go home as she’s bloody jinxed. “Come on Jessica, you’re either you’re killing every one yourself or you’re cursed. Either way, you’re more prolific than Harold Shipman for Christ’s sake!”

Well, the show is coming back in an NBC rebooted upgrade. THE HELP’s Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer set as the lead of a hospital administrator and budding crime writer, with Lansbury (now 88 and last seen in MR. POPPERS PENGUINS) approached to be part of the show in some aspect. Desperate Housewives regular Alexandra Cunningham is penning the pilot and executive producing alongside David Janollari.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
