Following the surprising success of the critically acclaimed crime-thriller PRISONERS, Jake Gyllenhaal looks set to follow it up with another gritty drama SOUTHPAW. The long-gestating project has struggled on its way to the big-screen after being in development since 2010, with sulky superstar rapper Eminem set for the lead despite his only previous big-screen experience being semi-autobiograhical drama 8 MILE. The DONNIE DARKO actor is currently said to be in final negotiations.

TRAINING DAY and OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN director Antoine Fuqua is still attached to direct and is hoping to begin shooting early next year. Once work is completed on his reboot of cult series THE EQUALIZER starring Denzel Washington. The plot will see Gyllenhaal as a left-handed fighter who wins a major title in the sport. Suffering a tragedy shortly afterwards, his life spirals out of control but finds he must piece it back together before hitting rock bottom and losing his young daughter.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
