Actress Natalie Portman, currently on screens as the god of thunder’s human better half in the highly enjoyable THOR: THE DARK WORLD, says she is ready to direct her first film.
Portman set up production company Handsomecharlie Films, with which she is working as a producer on films such as the upcoming western JANE GOT A GUN, which will star Portman alongside Ewan McGregor. For her first project as a director however, she is venturing into the world of documentaries.
‘We have a couple of documentaries going right now, one of which is EATING ANIMALS, which I’m really excited about – the documentary adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s book’.
Foer’s book discusses controversial methods of food production, notably factory farming and commercial fishing, covering the treatment of the animals involved and the risks to the health of the human consumers. He also takes a broader view and looks at what food means to us.
This topic is very personal to Portman, an animal rights activist who, a vegetarian from an early age, became a vegan after reading Eating Animals. As she believes so strongly in the book’s message, EATING ANIMALS could be a very powerful film.
