You can bet that somewhere right now Disney and Marvel executives are cracking open the champagne to celebrate yet another success for the mighty studio with THOR: THE DARK WORLD. Clearly THE AVENGERS has worked on many different levels with it not only making $1.5 billion dollars at the worldwide box office, but also igniting mass interest in the characters’ solo adventures. This was shown through this years IRON MAN 3, which became the fifth highest grossing film of all time. Now THOR: THE DARK WORLD has already out-grossed the original film and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, as it soars its way past $479 million worldwide and spends its second week at the No. 1 spot in the North American box office. The films’ international gross of $332.8 is also past that of not only THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER but also IRON MAN and IRON MAN 2!
Universal’s sequel BEST MAN HOLIDAY starring Morris Chestnut, Terrence Howard and Taye Diggs opened higher than anyone expected with a gross of $30.6 million putting it at number 2 after Marvel’s “God of Thunder”. LAST VEGAS from CBS films is at third place in its third week of release which is very respectable after falling only 20% since last week. FREE BIRDS starring Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson is at 4 and JACKASS PRESENTS: BAD GRANDPA has the fifth spot. All in all not bad from any of the films as they have all retained a place in the top 5 for a number of weeks and I doubt any of the studios will be disappointed with the results.
The real film that will shake things up will be this weekends big release of THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE which is predicted to be box office dynamite, so we’ll keep you updated with how it does after this weekend.
