Warner Target Greengrass To Take ‘The Stand’

Only days after confirmation of Scott Cooper’s departure from Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the Stephen King iconic novel THE STAND, it appears the studio already have their eye on replacements. Previously attached to David Yates and Ben Affleck before they ventured onto a TARZAN reboot and superhero sequel BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN respectively, Cooper cited that old chestnut of “creative differences” over the direction of the epic project. One that Warner really does have high hopes for. Yet, they want a PG-13 while Cooper needed an R-rating the do King’s book justice.

Well, they have apparently drawn up a list of talent that they hope will take the plagued project on, with the reality-grounded director of THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM and CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, Paul Greengrass, topping the list. However, Greengrass is a notoriously passionate filmmaker who, like Cooper, will want to adapt it his way!

Other names currently in the frame are JAYNE EYRE’s Cary Fukunaga (whose must recent project is HBO’S tense serial-killer drama True Detective), PRISONERS’ Denis Villeneuve and SAFE HOUSE helmer Daniel Espinosa. All pretty adult-minded filmmakers in their own right.

Who would choose to take THE STAND?

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
