Steven Moffat Talks Peter Capaldi In ‘Doctor Who’

Peter Capaldi

For those of you hoping to escape the Doctor Who madness that has ensued in the shows 50th anniversary year, I’m afraid you won’t get your wish anytime soon. Even though the 50th anniversary special, The Day Of The Doctor has now aired to every Whovians squeals of joy, critical acclaim and ratings glory, there still plenty more to look forward to.

With Matt Smith’s final episode to air on Christmas Day next month, the festive special will usher in a brand new Time Lord in the form of Peter Capaldi, who made a surprise cameo in last weeks anniversary episode. Capaldi’s Doctor will be a departure from the shows recent iterations of the character due to his age alone, the 55 year old actor is fittingly the exact same age the original Doctor William Hartnell was when he was cast in the role 50 years ago. Capaldi has also interestingly played a role in Doctor Who before and in its spinoff show Torchwood as another completely different character. Current show runner Steven Moffat has given a few hints in a new interview as to what we can expect from Capaldi’s version of the character:

“He’s a genius. He is a genius actor. That’s not even controversial to say. He’s got a great love of the part. The moment you think of Peter Capaldi and that face in the TARDIS, that works and everybody gets that. He’s going to give us a whole new kind of Doctor. We’ve got used to two brilliant iterations of the younger, more popular Doctor and they have both been superlative, but now it’s time for the old beast to snarl at you for a bit! Sometimes you see that a bit in Matt Smith’s Doctor. He will remind the people around him, ‘I’m not really like this.’ But I think Peter’s Doctor will make that even clearer”.

You can also see the video interview below where Moffat talks more about the show including Paul McGann’s recent re-appearance:

Matt Smith will make his final appearance as The Doctor in The Time Of The Doctor this Christmas with Peter Capaldi also making his debut before his first full series next August.
