As any Tumblr account holder may know, the fact that TITANIC star Leonardo DiCaprio hasn’t yet won an Oscar is something you can make many, many GIF sets out of. As a long-time fan of his, I think it’s really sad he hasn’t been given the honour of placing a golden statuette on his mantelpiece – but THE WOLF OF WALL STREET may be about to change that.
THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, based on the life of scoundrel banker Jordan Belfort and directed by living legend Martin Scorsese, debuted to SAG voters and several critics this weekend, with reports surfacing that the film received a rapturous reception. Described as ‘Scorsese’s Satyricon’, the film has ‘put Scorsese right back in the thick of the Oscar race, if Academy members, particularly older ones, can deal with the almost non-stop parade of sex, drugs, nudity and rock and roll’. Sounds like fun!
With a three hour running time, it was recently announced that the film has been given an R rating, which isn’t surprising when you consider what the real-life story involves. At the post-screening Q&A session, DiCaprio himself described the film to a T:
“It’s all true. That’s what is so fascinating about the novel [the film is adapted from Belfort’s autobiography]. That’s why I was so obsessed with playing this character. It was a seven-year process to get this film made. The financing kept falling apart…It was a very difficult film to finance. It’s like the Roman Empire in the 1980s. It’s debaucherous, it was sex and drugs and greed. It wasn’t the most commercial sounding film but Marty’s attitude was always ‘Let’s focus on this being a really dark comedy’…I told him after the Golden Globes one night ‘We have to do this movie. We don’t get opportunities like this, ever. These opportunities like this don’t come about. We have to do this movie”.
After the Q&A Paramount threw a huge party, mirroring the one seen in the first trailer, solidifying THE WOLF OF WOLF STREET’s target of an Oscar nomination. Hopefully this awards season will be DiCaprio’s finest.
THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, co-starring Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Jon Favreau, Spike Jonze, Margot Robbie, Kyle Chandler and Jean Dujardin, will arrive in US cinemas from 25th December, with the UK following on 17th January 2014.
