It takes a very special production to stake a place in the heart of musicals in the UK and Wicked has effortlessly, and deservedly, found its spot in the hearts of British and international audiences alike. THN were recently lucky enough to see the show in the stunning Apollo Victoria Theatre, its London home, and highly recommend it.
The untold story of the Witches of Oz was surely never expected to find such a loyal fan base but this mightily impressive production beautifully tells the other side of the lives of those Witches before Dorothy arrived in Oz, which was most famously portrayed in 1939’s THE WIZARD OF OZ, based on L. Frank Baum’s classic book.
Wicked: The Musical was created after the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’ and has been one of the most successful Broadway and London musicals in recent times. It first opened in the USA in 2003 and followed here in 2006 and now…they’re on tour across the UK, so you can get to be a part of the story as well!
Whether you’re a musical fan or not, you can’t regret a moment of Wicked because it surprises and impresses in equal measure. Not only do they have an exciting cast (with two exceptional leads for both Witches) but it’s also technically stunning. When you throw in dazzling costumes, brilliant catchy songs and – quite unexpectedly – very relevant themes that run throughout the narrative, it’s the perfect gift for those who haven’t experienced it yet.
If you’re also looking for something for all the family, then you’re also in the right place. Beneath the dark surface of the setting, you’ve got light-hearted comedy, plus some good old-fashioned advice to accept those unlike ourselves and it brings forward an unexpected understanding of the ‘wicked witch’ that thrills and delights. The UK and Ireland Tour is just about to leave Manchester but you’ve still got a chance to see the show somewhere near you, so get those tickets now for a stunning Christmas present!
