David S. Goyer Developing Lesser Known DC Comics Properties

DC Comics

With news of DC Comics’ television universe coming together after numerous reports have claimed that a number of shows are in development, many were left wondering about DC’s big screen film universe. With this years MAN OF STEEL hinting at larger elements of the DC cinematic universe, its sequel BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN will break it wide open in 2015 with the plot rumoured to include a vast array of characters including Wonder Woman and Nightwing.

After David S. Goyer (BLADE TRINITY/THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy) signed a three year deal with Warner Bros., the writer/producer/director has been all but confirmed as the new creative consultant for the DC film universe, similar to Joss Whedon’s role over at Marvel. Now a new report claims 2014’s big news is that Goyer is taking film treatments for lesser known DC properties that will be developed at a fraction of the price that the big names such as SUPERMAN, BATMAN and WONDER WOMAN will be. Properties such as Suicide Squad and Booster Gold will be adapted at a budget of around $20 million without marketing and be released twice a year in the Spring and Autumn. This would sandwich the higher profile films like BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN or JUSTICE LEAGUE and expand their cinematic universe creatively and with minimal financial risk. Here is what the report says:

‘Suicide Squad is one specifically mentioned as only needing a $40 million budget, pre-marketing. Some could be made for as little as $20 million’.

Warner’s and DC would have to be extremely careful and not only use original creative talent with bold and exciting ideas but also market these films well. The films would have to be marketed well with significant connections to the larger productions including SUPERMAN, BATMAN etc in order to avoid repeating the financial failures of similar films such as DREDD, PUNISHER: WAR ZONE and GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE.
