Simon Kinberg (X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, STAR WARS REBELS) produced 2011’s X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and co-wrote the upcoming X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and FANTASTIC FOUR. Now it’s looking like he will shape a shared universe for 20th Century Fox’s Marvel properties that will combine all of their characters and tell shared narratives across multiple films.
This dosen’t come as a massive shock after Marvel Studios changed the superhero movie making game with AVENGERS ASSEMBLE, and subsequently showed the world that not only can a shared universe work but it can also make a tonne of money at the box office. Marvel studios have Joss Whedon to guide their film universe, and Warner Bros have David S. Goyer signed on for a similar role in order to produce a DC Comics cinematic universe. Now 20th Century Fox are following their lead and will be combining the Marvel properties they currently own the rights to (which are X-MEN, FANTASTIC FOUR and THE SILVER SURFER). Fox arguably have a slight edge because they have technically been building their film universe since X-MEN (2000). Here is what Kinberg had to say on the matter:
‘I have a lot of ideas on how to built those brands and do what everybody is thinking of these days: Be like Marvel. I want to be able to build stories over multiple movies’.
Fox currently have a number of films in development and will no doubt be planting seeds for an eventual X-MEN/FANTASTIC FOUR crossover in the future. They have next years X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST coming up, as well as its recently announced sequel set for 2016 and Josh Trank’s FANTASTIC FOUR reboot that will hit cinemas June 2015.
