Essentially the ‘cool’ group away from the Gothams and Independent Spirit Awards, Los Angeles’ film critics were definitely feeling a little indecisive. But, after four hours of voting, GRAVITY and HER came out on top, proving a big boost for Spike Jonze’s Siri-esque love story.
Though I’m not a huge fan of declaring each category’s runner-up, it is interesting to see the difference between their first and second choices, especially when they can be as different as GRAVITY and INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS for Best Cinematography or GRAVITY and UPSTREAM COLOUR for Best Editing. It shows Shane Carruth’s film was at least in the LAFCA’s consciousness.
It’s clear to see that the Best Doc race is neck and neck when it comes to STORIES WE TELL and THE ACT OF KILLING, but the Academy do like to throw a documentary-shaped curveball at the last minute. We’ll just have to wait and see if Sarah Polley and Joshua Oppenheimer’s work will withstand the heat.
