Coppola To Co-Write ‘Fairyland’

Sophia Coppola

Sophia Coppola (THE BLING RING) has signed on to co-write and produce book-to-film adaptation FAIRYLAND.

Based on Alysia Abbott’s novel, it’s a coming-of-age story set in San Francisco during the 1970s and 1980s, incorporating Abbott’s experiences of growing up during the AIDS epidemic, which claimed the life of her father Steve. Coppola will collaborate with long-time friend and colleague Andrew Durham for the screenplay, whilst working with her brother Roman during production.

It seems Alysia is quite pleased with Sophia signing up to the project:

“I’m delighted that Sophia Coppola and Zoetrope [American Zoetrope have acquired the rights] are going to create the film version of Fairyland. Sofia’s understanding of the feminine perspective and the artistic vision that she shares with Andrew Durham make them ideal partners to make this movie. I could not be happier”.

Coppola has chimed in, commenting:

“I love the book Fairyland; it’s a sweet and unique love story of a girl and her dad, both growing up together in 1970s San Francisco. I think it will make an engaging and touching movie on a subject I’ve never seen before”.

I’m a huge fan of Coppola and her artistic style/vision; whilst I loved THE BLING RING, others hated it. I’m excited to see what she does with FAIRYLAND, especially with such a unique and intriguing story.

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
