Not so long ago THN brought the news that a certain Joseph Gordon Levitt was eyeing a role in SANDMAN, an adaptation of author Neil Gaiman’s work. Earlier the star took to his Twitter and Facebook pages to confirm that he’s definitely a part, although beyond being a Producer, the rest is still in the works:
Although his tweet does not divulge an excess of information, after his fantastic job of directing DON JON, it is likely that Levitt will again both star and direct the film. The use of #Prelude would suggest that the story will follow that of Preludes and Nocturnes, the first collection of the comic book series. It would also appear that David Goyer will be on producing details, whilst Neil Gaiman himself might be the man to write the script.
The plot of the series is a little less straight forward than that of your usual comic/graphic novel story with the protagonist Morpheus, also known as Dream, being the Lord of Dreams, who is essentially the personification of dreams. The series began with Morpheus escaping a 70 year long capture, entering the modern world, and avenging himself, whilst trying to rebuild his fallen kingdom. The story straddled both the horror and fantasy genres, so there is scope for the project to become quite big.
Joseph Gordon Levitt started his career very young and is one of the few cases of an actor surviving the transition from child to adult star. He first made his name in television comedy Third Rock From The Sun, but has since gone to work across all different genres with parts in films such as LOOPER, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, and BRICK. The actor also runs his own online media collaboration site HitRECord. Anyone can join and take part in the various projects on the site, with the success leading to a television series that has been produced entirely by work through the website.
His directorial debut, feature DON JON, which he also wrote, got rave reviews, with critics across the board expressing their excitement to see what he follows it up with. It will also help knowing that he calls directors Christopher Nolan, Rian Johnson, and Edgar Wright friends, so he won’t be short of people to turn to for advice.
