Whilst most of you spent your Tuesday evening getting into the festive spirit, perhaps putting up decorations or watching an early Christmas movie, our evening was distinctly more fitting to Halloween.

Ahead of the home entertainment release of James Wan’s latest supernatural thriller THE CONJURING we were invited to experience a haunting first hand. St.Clere’s Hall in Essex, is a notorious haunted house, said to house several spirits with staff at the site stating that they have felt a presence watching them whilst alone.

We kicked the evening off with a guided tour of the building by paranormal enthusiast group Haunted Happenings. The dark, dank cellar is where we first tried to make contact. Said to be frequented by a male entity which likes to not only look at the living, but touch them too. The group held hands and formed a circle and heard all manner of bangs and creaks. Then we made our way up to what used to be a nursery wherein one brave member agreed to sit and stare at his reflection. The hope was that any spirit around might try and show us what they looked like by manipulating the image in the mirror. We ended our tour in an upstairs room, a room with reports that tell of a ghostly woman that stands at the window. Haunted Happenings then presented us with a Ouija Board. After some initial reluctance THN decided to be brave an give it a whirl. Turns out our ghost was a pretty chatty lady.

Once the tour was ended, and all potential supernatural beings had been suitably awakened, each member of the tour was taken to a different part of the house to complete the final challenge of the night; to watch THE CONJURING in a haunted house. The room littered with replica Annabelle dolls, was pitch black and included nothing more than a chair to sit on, a tablet with headphones to watch the film, and a camera to film how well we faired.

Watching a film such as THE CONJURING in an environment like this definitely helped add an extra dimension to the film viewing experience, and having missed the film during it’s cinema release, I found it pleasantly entertaining. Much in the vein of previous films THE LAST EXORCISM and INSIDIOUS. I’ve never been too keen on porcelain dolls and this film has done nothing to cure this.

The whole evening was filmed for entertainment, see the footage below:

THE CONJURING is out to buy on Blu-Ray and DVD from Monday 9th December.
