Check Out Benedict Cumberbatch As Alan Turing In First Photo For ‘The Imitation Game’

Cumberbatch as Turing

The first photo of Benedict Cumberbatch as scientist Alan Turing has just been released by the producer of the upcoming biopic THE IMITATION GAME days after it was announced Turing will be pardoned for a conviction of over fifty years ago.

Turing received a posthumous Royal pardon earlier this week for his 1952 conviction of homosexuality which led to him being chemically castrated. If you aren’t already aware of Turing’s story, THN’s very own John Sharp perhaps puts it best when he says ‘not only was Turing a genius, he was a badass.’  A British mathematician and computer scientist, Turing is widely regarded as the father of computer science and artificial intelligence.  He was instrumental in helping break German code in WWII and went on to formalise some hefty mathematical concepts.  However, on discovering Turing was a homosexual he was castrated and forbidden from continuing his work which many believe led to his suicide by cyanide poisoning in 1954.

The script for THE IMITATION GAME, written by Graham Moore, topped 2011’s blacklist which should give some indication as to the quality; the list also featured SAVING MR BANKS and DJANGO UNCHAINED, the latter winning the Academy Award for Original Screenplay for 2013. Norwegian director Morten Tyldum (HEADHUNTERS) is at the helm with a cast that also includes Keira Knightly and Matthew Goode.

There’s not too much to be learnt from the released photo as seen above; Cumberbatch will be doing some computer-esque stuff is about the gist of it.  We’re hoping to catch sight of a trailer for this highly anticipated drama sooner rather than later to really get a feel for the tone Tyldum has brought to Turing’s story.

THE IMITATION GAME is due to hit our screens in 2014.
