What? Of course you haven’t had enough Doctor Who news! Following various bemoaning of writing and narrative flowing effortlessly from the ungrateful claws of Whovian’s (Who-Vains?) across the world, Steven Moffat, the man currently at the top of what happens in the world of the Gallifreyan timelord has announced that changes are definitely afoot.
Moffat had the following to say about the process, including talks with the man who bought it back to the small screen, Russell T Davis:
“If Russell had stayed on, [the show] would still have changed. I remember when we had our handover chat, he was saying ‘so what are you going to do, are you going to change that?’ and I said ‘well, what would you change?’ and we both agreed ‘it’s time to kick a lot of stuff out’. And actually, it is time again to do that. I just felt watching last time around that ‘oh, it’s time we fixed that and changed that and moved that up a bit and changed that tone’.”
I think that, in itself, would please a lot of fans old and new and – if I’m honest – I always love a bit of change. Moffat continued:
“It changes all the time, and it’s keeping ahead of the audience in a way. All shows age and they all age sort of in the same way. You learn how to do it, you get really slick at it, and then you think you’re really, really slick at it and everyone’s started to yawn. And you think ‘oh God, we’re really slick at this but everyone knows what we’re going to do’. So now we’ve got to actually get a bit raw at it and do it in a different direction. It happens on every show – you get good at it and ‘good at it’ is the enemy in the end.”
Whatever your personal view on the showrunner, he definitely loves Doctor Who and saying that he’s in it for himself or his own ego is beyond nonsensical. Like RTD before him, Steven Moffat is an avid Who fan and you can’t really delve into the world that he bravely gets into without caring about the output. If you’re in any unsustainable doubt at all, or just don’t agree, have a little read of his words he gave to us all at the 50th Anniversary Celebration at the ExCel in November in 2013.
For all other things Doctor Who, you can head over here, but do let us know what you’d like to see with fresh beginnings! Filming on series 8 begins next month and there are various rumours when the first episode will air. It could be Easter – if we’re lucky – but I think the likelihood is late August 2014.
