Adam Driver Joins Martin Scorsese’s ‘Silence’

Adam Driver

Girls star Adam Driver is starting to turn heads. After a memorable performance in Michael Dowse’s THE F WORD and the anticipation for his upcoming film TRACKS co-starring Mia Wasikowska, according to latest news, Driver has landed a lead role in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film SILENCE.

Driver will be joining Andrew Garfield and Ken Watanabe in Scorsese’s adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s historial novel, a project that has been on hold for a few years. SILENCE follows the story of two 17th century Jesuit priests who travel to Japan to investigate claims of religious persecution. As most of the cast is rumored to be Japanese, it is only logical to assume that Garfield and Driver will take on the roles of the two priests, with Watanabe playing their translator. The movie is set to start shooting next summer.

Here is a synopsis of Shusako Endo’s novel Silence’:

“Silence is a novel of historical fiction by Japanese author Shusako Endo. It is the story of a Jesuit misionary sent to seventeenth century Japan, who endured persecution in the time of Kakure Kirishitan (“Hiddean Christians”) that followed the defeat of the Shimabara Rebellion.

Written mostly in the form of a letter by its central character, the theme of a silent God who accompanies a believer in adversity was greatly influenced by the Catholic Endo’s experience of religious discrimination in Japan, racism in France and debilitating tuberculosis.
