Shailene Woodley (THE DESCENDANTS) will be seen next in Summit Entertainment’s DIVERGENT based on Veronica Roth’s novel of the same name. However the actress was originally set to play classic love interest Mary Jane Watson in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 from Sony and Marvel. After a huge uproar from comic fans at the casting of Woodley the majority of us thought it was best to wait and see what the incredible actress did with the character, albeit in a minor role for future expansion.
After filming had completed last year it was mysteriously announced that Woodley’s scenes had been cut from the upcoming sequel in order to focus on the central relationship of Peter (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen (Emma Stone), as opposed to complicating the already convoluted narrative even further. Whether there is a more malicious reason for Woodley’s axing is unknown but the actress was recently asked if she will be back for the third installment in the franchise, you can read her response below:
I don’t know anything, but seeing as how they picked up the next two DIVERGENT films, I don’t know how I would keep my sanity with two big action films in one year. But anything can happen.
Sounds like THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 will more than likely cast a new Mary Jane which is a shame as Woodley is a fantastic actress and one of the best up and coming young stars working in Hollywood. You can see some images of Woodley filming scenes that unfortunately we are unlikely to ever see from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 below:
