Back in 2010, Ron Howard ambitiously announced attempts to produce adaptations of THE DARK TOWER series based on the works of Stephen King. His plan was to execute a number of films and even a TV series in order to tell the expansive fantasy story. Unfortunately, there didn’t seem to be a studio willing to back Howard, as they wanted to make one film and see how the story (or box-office) went before making a commitment. Although Howard continues to insist he is sticking with the project, he has also stated that nothing will be talked about unless it was concrete.
However, during an interview with Ain’t It Cool News, Aaron Paul, most famous for his role as drug peddling ‘bitch’ saying Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad, was casually told he would be perfect for the role of Eddie Dean in THE DARK TOWER series. Paul actually confirmed that he had already had meetings over that specific character:
I’ve had a ton of meetings on that. I just had a general sit down with Ron Howard, who is a huge fan of the show (Breaking Bad), which is such a crazy thing to even think that Ron Howard even knows who I am. They’re definitely planning on making it. I’m excited. Their goal is to do three films, but also have a television element to it, which will be very interesting. From what I hear, Eddie Dean is a pretty epic, iconic character.
So it sounds as though things are moving ahead, but also that Paul is yet to read the books so it doesn’t seem a done deal just yet. Eddie Dean also entered the franchise in the second book, so unless things are shot back-to-back it may be a while before we get to the drug-addicted New Yorker of Eddie Dean. With all this talk, I may have time to check out the books before a cinematic release.
