In a time rife with strong female heroins proving that women can kick ass first and ask questions later just as well as men, it seems only fitting that Jean-Claude Forest’s pulp creation ‘Barbarella‘ should make her return. The character made her debut as a comic serial in the French publication V-Magazine and was brought to a wider audience in Rodger Vadim’s 1968 feature film BARBARELLA staring Jane Fonda as the titular space babe.
After many attempts at bringing the character back to the big screen Amazon Studios is now planning the production of a pilot in hopes to kick off a new TV series. The pilot, penned by SKYFALL writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade will feature DRIVE director Nicolas Winding Refn as an executive producer. He’ll be working beside producer Martha De Laurentiis who worked on NBC’s HANNIBAL.
It might be early days yet but the project certainly has talent involved but whether it will take the character in new directions or pander to current tropes is yet to be seen. Tired of old ideas? drowning in a sea of rehashes and remakes? Do let us know what you think below.
