Gabriel Byrne has joined the cast of the Chilean miners film THE 33, according to Deadline. The Irish actor, who was excellent in THE USUAL SUSPECTS, will star as Andre Sougarret, the guy behind the rescue of the 33 Chilean miners who were trapped underground in 2010.
Sougarret was the chief engineer in charge of rescue of the miners, and frequently appeared on news bulletins across the globe (see below).
Antonio Banderas, Juliette Binoche, and Rodrigo Santoro are also amongst the cast of the film, which is already undergoing a hefty shoot in Columbia under the direction of Patricia Riggen. Production continues to the Atacama desert later next month.
