As an actor Nicolas Cage possesses immense scope, variety and gravitas, it’s a shame however that he has chosen not to use his talent for quality films as of late. Cage has been heavily criticized for his questionable acting choices recently and the star has received extremely negative reception from the vast majority of his films (arguably) for the past decade. This is incredibly unfortunate as the talented actor has legions of fans (myself included) all over the world. I would argue that KICK ASS was Cage’s last enjoyable role although I do admittedly have a soft spot for the NATIONAL TREASURE films.
Now the first trailer for Cage’s latest film JOE has been released, which was directed by David Gordon Green (PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, THE SITTER). The film revolves around a man named Joe (Cage), an aggressive ex con who strikes up an unexpected bond with an unfortunate 15 year old boy suffering in his own home. Joe becomes a surrogate father and protector to the boy whilst trying to find his place in the world. You can see the trailer below and if you’re a fan of either Cage or Green you’re definitely in for a treat:
JOE is based on the 1991 novel of the same name by Larry Brown and was screened last year at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. The film received positive reviews from both festivals and looks like it could be one of the best films Nicolas Cage has starred in for years. The trailer not only signals a dramatic new change for Cage but also Green who is predominantly a comedy director.
JOE will be released in the UK on 25th July, you can check back with The Hollywood News for more updates on the promising film.
