In a move that’s sure to anger Potterheads worldwide, J.K. Rowling, author of the bestselling HARRY POTTER books, has admitted she regrets her decision to pair off Harry’s counterparts Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger – stating Harry and Hermione would have been a much better match as far as the story was concerned.
Rowling revealed in an interview that Ron and Hermione only really got together due to her steadfastness in terms of changing her original story:
‘For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.
I know, I’m sorry, I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.’
The interview was conducted by actress Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the HARRY POTTER saga from 2001-2011. She agreed with Rowling at the time, saying:
‘I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy.’
At the end of the day, it is what it is and Ron and Hermione obviously get together in the final books and films (erm, spoiler alert?). But while Emma seems confident the fans will agree, I’m not so sure. One of the great things about the books is the relationship between Harry and Hermione; it wasn’t romanticised and was more of a brother/sister bond that the two shared, with mutual experiences – both having come from Muggle backgrounds.
Still, I’ve been wrong before (once), so let us know in the comments below whether you think Harry and Hermione should have been paired off in the HARRY POTTER saga.
