New ‘Divergent’ Trailer

The latest UK trailer for DIVERGENT certainly has a very HUNGER GAMES feel to it. Based on the bestselling novels by Veronica Roth, DIVERGENT sees a world where the young are tested and inserted into specific groups. Our protagonist, being different as protagonists often are, does not fit into any of the preassigned groups as she can control her fear. This makes her a valuable asset, but also very dangerous.

The trailer is very exposition heavy and I can only hope the mythology unravels naturally throughout the film. Some obvious dialogue also makes me feel cautious about this adpatation, but thankfully teh acting chops of Kate Winslet and Ashley Judd offer some consolation. It’s obvious who this film is marketing itself towards, but with the lacklustre interest in THE HOST, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, and THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS, is there any need or room for more Young Adult adaptations?

DIVERGENT is released on 21st March in the US and on 4th April in the UK. It stars Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Kate Winslet, Ansel Elgort, Theo James, Zoe Kravitz, Maggie Q, Ray Stevenson, and Jai Courtney.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.

Good grief. Slotting something into the “Young Adult” category is no excuse for a premise so ridiculous. Suspending one’s disbelief for an allegory is one thing, but this is just extremely silly.

It’s obviously only a film because the books had good sales. And the books only had good sales because they were expertly marketed to the target demographic, who were so starving for the next Harry Potter/Hunger Games/Whatever that they would eagerly buy whatever rubbish they were told to buy, instead of reading any number of good, well-written books gathering dust in the backlists.

    Avoid.
