The second series of Netflix’s game-changing House Of Cards hasn’t been broadcast yet, but the streaming provider is clearly confident in its first original output, as a third series has already been green-lit.

The critically acclaimed series, starring Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and Kate Mara, returns next week, with the entirety of its second series of episodes available simultaneously through Netflix – as per its unique business model. Now Netflix is looking further ahead, with production on a third series starting later this year. Chief content officer Ted Sarandos said at a November panel that the show could go on and on:

‘I think if you look at the original House of Cards, there was a natural third season, and we could go well beyond that.’

The company followed up their first series of HOUSE OF CARDS last year with other original content including ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, HEMLOCK GROVE and a fourth series of cult show ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. HOUSE OF CARDS’ first season received nine Emmy and four Golden Globe nominations, with a win for lead actress Robin Wright, who plays the wife of Kevin Spacey’s dark, manipulative Frank Underwood. Wright told The Wrap that the show has plenty more life left in it yet:

‘We’re only on the second season so far. When you think about all the other shows that have gone on five, six, eight seasons. We’re amateurs in a sense. We’re Bambi’s in the woods.’

HOUSE OF CARDS’ second season hits Netflix worldwide on 14th February, 2014. It stars Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Kate Mara, Michael Kelly, Constance Zimmer, Ben Daniels and Sakina Jaffrey.
