Everybody loves Lego. Literally everybody. The only people who have even considered not liking Lego are the ones who stepped barefoot onto a brick or two. This hypotheses was proven this weekend over in the US as THE LEGO MOVIE not only topped the box-office, but did so in style. The film, based on the legendary Danish building blocks, managed to come away with $69.1 million, after only being predicted to take between $40 and $60 million. This makes the film the second highest grossing release in the history of Februarys, behind THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST’s $83.8 million. THE LEGO MOVIE, which opens in the UK next week, has received positive reviews and strong word of mouth.
The other releases in the US this week included THE MONUMENTS MEN, which took a respectable $22.7 million. The George Clonney directed, written by, produced by, and starring feature follows a group of soldiers out to protect art from the Nazis. The other new release, VAMPIRE ACADEMY, failed to sink its teeth into viewers, and only managed a take of $4.1 million. It was a tough challenge, as THE LEGO MOVIE is something that appeals to absolutely anybody.
1. The LEGO Movie $69,110,000 $69.1
2. The Monuments Men $22,700,000 $22.7
3. Ride Along $9,400,000 $105.1
4. Frozen $6,914,000 $368.6
5. That Awkward Moment $5,400,000 $16.8
6. Lone Survivor $5,300,000 $112.5
7. Vampire Academy $4,100,000 $4.1
8. The Nut Job $3,809,000 $55
9. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit $3,600,000 $44.4
10. Labor Day $3,230,000 $10.1
THE LEGO MOVIE and THE MONUMENTS MEN are both released on 14th February in the UK. VAMPIRE ACADEMY is not released in the UK until 23rd April.
