Last night, the British Academy Film Awards took place in London’s West End as Hollywood’s elite descended onto the red carpet at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. The big winners on the night were GRAVITY and Steve McQueen’s 12 YEARS A SLAVE. GRAVITY picked up six awards on the night, including Outstanding British Film, Original Music, Cinematography, Sound and Special Visual Effects with Alfonso Cuarón winning for Director. 12 YEARS A SLAVE however, picked up two of the big ones, Best Film with Chiwetel Ejiofor winning Leading Actor. Leading Actress was presented to Cate Blanchett for playing the title role in BLUE JASMINE – her third BAFTA win – and in his feature film debut Barkhad Abdi won Supporting Actor for the superb CAPTAIN PHILLIPS. Absentee Jennifer Lawrence won Supporting Actress for AMERICAN HUSTLE.

In the only award voted for by the public, Will Poulter bagged the EE Rising Star award, a well derserved win for the young actor whose screen credits include SON OF RAMBOW, THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER and the more recent WE’RE THE MILLERS.
